Eddie Rickenbacker during a radio address in San Francisco , California . The photograph was taken in September , 1942 . Rickenbacker was lost at sea for twenty-four days after the B-17 he was on went down in the Pacific in October , 1942 . This photograph was used with a news story while he was missing in the Pacific . News story on verso reads , "San Francisco --- This photo of Capt . Eddie Rickenbacker , who gained fame as American "ace " during World War I , and then became a prominent airline executive , and still later rejoined the Air Force , was made during a visit to San Franciso last September when he made a radio address here. Rickenbacker has been reported missing while on an inspection tour of the Pacific by bomber.. . sent 10-24-42. "
