Description
The Soong family befriended Eugene B . Sledge while he was stationed in Peiping (Beijing) , China at the end of World War II . Sledge describes his friendship with them and the Catholic priest Marcel von Hemelryjck as "his personal bridge back to civilization and culture after so many months of killing " in his book China Marine , which takes up Sledge's story where With The Old Breed left off . Pictured here are Margaret Soong (center) , Dr . Soong's wife , her sister Anna (right) , and Anna's son , Chieh-ni (left) .
