SUMMARY
This report presents the data and results obtained
from bearing tests on heat-treated aluminum-alloy
sheet of Specification 57- 152-3 (17ST), and 24ST, and
24SRT sheet to determine allowable bearing values
from the elongation characteristics of various rivethole
sizes in several sheet thicknesses. It was concluded
from the tests that, regardless of the size of the
bearing pin and thickness of sheet for the ranges tested,
the average bearing stress was a constant value of
75,.000 pounds per square inch for l 7ST sheet, and
90,000 pounds per square inch for 24ST and 24SRT
sheet at an elongation of 4 percent of the pin diameter
where the rivet holes are 7~ inch and greater from
the edge of the sheet.
The tests were made with sheet thicknesses of approximately
0.015, 0.022, 0.032, 0.040, and 0.050 inch
on bearing pins having nominal diameters of %2, ?i,
%2, and Yis inch. The sheet was supported around the
rivet holes and no eccentricity was present in these
tests.
DATE AND PLACE OF TEST
The test work reported herein was performed in the
Materiel Branch , Wright Field, during the month of
April 1933.
HISTORY AND OBJECT
From time to time various a ircraft manufacturers
have questioned the lower allowable bearing values of
heat treated aluminum alloy sheet (Specification
57-152-3) on rivets as specified by the United States
Army in the Handbook of Instructions for Airplane
Designers, Seventh Edition. This handbook a llows
75,000 pounds per square inch bearing stress on rivets
in sheets of 0.035 inch and thicker. For sh eets thinner
than 0.035 inch the present allowable bearing stress
decreased linearly from 75,000 pounds per square inch
to zero as the sheet varies from 0.035 inch in thickness
to zero.
The contentions of the manufacturers were usually
supported by test data, all of which showed allowable
bearing values considerably in excess to those allowed
by the handbook. However, these tests were not complete
inasmuch as the results and conclusions were
based on the ultimate. E longation of the rivet hole
was not considered. Whereas the ultimate strength is
used for design in most cases of airplane construction
for the Army, it is believed that t his should not be the
criteria for riveted joints, but rather the elongation of
the rivet hole in terms of the rivet diameter, should be
the criteria. This is based on the fact that there are
usually localized stresses around riveted joints in combination
with vibration which are not accounted for
by static test in the laboratory.
At the present time any criteria for determining the
allowable bearing stress on alum in um-alloy sheet is
purely arbitrary and must be based on considerations
of practical service in the field. In establishing a
criteria in terms of elongation of the rivet hole, it was
reasoned that since the elongation of the rivet hole in
terms of the rivet diameter for 75,000 pounds per square
inch bearing stress on sheets 0.035 inch and thicker of
Specification 57-152- 3 was satisfactory in service, the
bearing stress on sheets of other thickness at the same
percent elongation would be satisfactory for design use.
Accordingly, bearing tests were made with nominal
bearing pin diameters of %2, Ys, %2, and Yis inch on
0.032 inch sheet (nearest available thickness to 0.035
inch) with particular reference to the elongation of the
rivet hole. The results for each bearing pin size,
plotted as bearing stress versus elongation of the rivet
hole, indicated approximately 75,000 pounds per
square inch bearing stress at an elongation of 4 percent
of the diameter of the bearing pin. This work was
repeated with other sheet thicknesses and is reported
herein on the basis of the bearing stress at 4 percent of
the diameter of the bearing pin as a criteria for allowabie
beacing stress in heat treated aluminum alloy
sheet Specification 57- 152- 3 on rivets.
METHOD OF TEST
The method of testing may be observed by reference
to the drawing of t he jig in figure 1. The jig was
made up of six links, L1 to Ls of Ys- by 1-inch
chromemolybdenum-steel straps arranged as shown.
The two links, L1 and Ls, were gripped in the jaws of
an Amsler testing machine reduced from 50,000 to
4,000 pounds capacity. The specimen was attached
to L, and L 6 through two pairs of connecting links
L2L 3 and L4L5 in the manner shown. This arrangement

Several tests were made for each pin diameter and CONCLUSIONS

stress.
The major part of the bearing test was made with
the center line of the rivet hole located ~ inch from the
edge of the sheet. A limited investigation was made
to determine the effect on the bearing stress by varying
the distance of the rivet hole from the edge of the sheet.
Th.is series of tests was made on 0.022-inch sheet with
the center line of the rivet hole located %, }~ , % ,and Y.
in ch from the edge of the sheet.
Careful measurements were made on the diameters
of the bearing pin and thickness of sheet near the rivet
hole for calculating the bearing stress. The measured
diameters of the drill rod bearing pins of nominal
diameters of %z, %z, and %6 inch was 0.0935, 0.155,
and 0.187 inch, respectively, after heat treating to
200,000 pounds per square inch. The Ys-inch harddrawn
steel piano wire measured 0.125 inch.
DISCUSSION
The ultimate tensile strength of t he material is ghren
in table I. Table II to table XIII show t he observed
deflections and are presented in the form of curves,
figures 3 to 8 inclusive, by plotting bearing stress in
pounds per square inch against eiongation of rivet hole
in inches. The observed deflections in the above
tables are the actual elongations increased by 5 on
account of this multiplier ratio in the strain gages.
Figure 2 gives a summary curve of these curves in
terms of bearing stress, pounds per square inch plotted
against elongatio11 of the rivet hole in percent of the
bearing-pin diameter. This curve is obtained from
curve B- 15, figure 5, and is from the data for a nominal
%2-inch bearing-pin diameter and sheet approximately
The curves of fig~1res 2 to 8 indicate that 75,000
pounds per sq ua1:e inch bearing stress may be used
satisfactorily in aluminum-alloy sheet, Specification
57- 152- 3, and that the elongation of the rivet hole will
not exceed 4 percent of the diameter of the bearing pin.
The investigation also shows that at this elongation the
bearing stress is unaffected by the size of bearing pin
and the thickness of sheet for the ranges tested when
the rivet hole is located Y. inch and greater from the
edge of the sheet.
24ST AND 24SRT ALUMINUM ALLOY
After completion of this report, Str- 51- 48, on the
bearing strength of l 7ST aluminum-alloy sheet, the
investigation was extended to include 24ST and 24SRT
alloys.
The 24ST alloy was submitted by a contractor and
the 24SRT alloy purchased from the Aluminnm Co. of
America. Thicknesses of from 0.027 to 0.065 inch in
the 24SRT alloy were investigated, and 0.021 and
0.028 inch in the 24ST alloy were also investigated .
The results of the investigation indicated bearing
stresses at 4 percent elongation of a single rivet hole of
close to 90,000 pounds per sq uare inch-, average. Ultimate
bearing stresses, based on the original thickness
of the sheet, of as high as 220,000 pounds per square
inch were experienced, but at elongations of from 1 to
17\! or more pin diameters.
Figure 2 of this report has been changed to include
typical curves of bearing stress plotted against percent
elongation of a single rivet hole. The curves indicate
that below about 50,000 pounds per square inch the
elongation characteristics of the various alloys are
practically identical, a rid that above this point the
elongations a re approximately proportional to the
ultimates of the alloys.
The bea ring st ress at 4 percent diameter elongation
was practically constant, and independent of both sheet
t hickness and pin diameter.
The physical p1·operties of the sheet used in the tests
were not available at the date of writing of this report
and will be added as an append ix when it becomes
available. ·
The test procedure was identical wit h that previously
reported.
