This image is a photograph used in the book Auburn , a Pictorial History of the Loveliest Village by Mickey Logue and Jack Simms , 2nd edition , 1996 , depicting the history of the city and the University . From page 271 : Frank Thomas , who lettered at Auburn as a six-foot-four freshman tight end in 1986 , dropped football after batting.359 , driving in 68 runs , hitting an Auburn record 21 homers , and being selected the All-SEC first baseman as a freshman . He also made all-conference the next two seasons and became Auburn's first consensus All-American baseball player at the end of his junior season , then signed a pro contract with the Chicago White Sox after being selected seventh overall in the 1989 draft . Seven years later , he remained Auburn's career leader in home runs with 49 , single-season home runs with 21 , RBI leader with 205 , and single-season RBI leader with 83 .
