This image is a photograph used in the book Auburn , a Pictorial History of the Loveliest Village by Mickey Logue and Jack Simms , 1st edition , 1981 , depicting the history of the city and the university . From page 255 : Bold Ruler , world's leading thoroughbred sire in the 1960s , is shown with Lawrence Robinson , Claiborne Farm's head stud groom , who brought him to Auburn in 1970 for cobalt treatment of a malignant tumor . After returning to Kentucky , he sired twenty-nine more foals before his death . Bold Ruler won the Preakness Stakes and a total of $784,204 in purses . His offspring won more than 800 races and more than $13 million . One of his great-grandsons , Seattle Slew , won the Triple Crown in 1977 . Photo source : Auburn University Nuclear Science Center .
