1900: Charles Thach's English class
Title
1900 : Charles Thach's English class
Description
This image is a photograph used in the book Auburn , a Pictorial History of the Loveliest Village by Mickey Logue and Jack Simms , 1st edition , 1981 , depicting the history of the city and the University . From page 72 : Professor Charles C . Thach taught this class in the main building , possibly in 1900 . His elevated desk and the benches for the students contrasted with the lecterns and individual desks of most classrooms today . Thach continued teaching after becoming president in 1902 , the first alumnus to serve as Auburn's chief executive . Leland Cooper , a 1907 graduate , recalled having taken junior and senior English under the president . "He had a lot of funny mannerisms " she said . "One was he'd talk and scratch his nose. " She said Thach liked major figures such as Shakespeare and Milton , and he spent more time on them than on less renowned writers . Photo source : Auburn University Archives .
