Description
This image is a photograph used in the book Auburn , a Pictorial History of the Loveliest Village by Mickey Logue and Jack Simms , 1st edition , 1981 , depicting the history of the city and the university . From page 42 : Cadets , the few coeds , and other town girls enjoyed outings in the 1890s carefully supervised by faculty members and their wives . When night fell at Wright's mill , old-times recalled , young couples were required to hold a lighted candle within sight of the chaperones . Identifiable at lower left is Professor A. F . McKissick , with fishing pole , bait can , and fish . He taught the first electrical engineering course in the South at Auburn . Photo source : Auburn University Archives .
