[page 1] South Carolina Ad[a]mes Run May the 6 1863 Dear [Companion ?] I seat my self this morning to drop you a few lines to let you now that I am fite for duty but I dont feel very well we was on a march yesterday and some of us got very wet I dident git wet onl[y] my feet and legs we had a [illegible] hot [stores ?] yesterday and some of the [illegible] that [illegible] hands [burned ?] up right smart I had the [illegible] and had [illegible] not very bad I am in hopes these few [lines ?] [illegible] wreach your hand In due time [illegible] afraid you [need ?] the childring well I [illegible] in hope [find ?] you in yesterday and [illegible] was [illegible] close to me but the letter that was in it was to [illegible] this letter had bin broke open I expect you to wright to me so hear you [lift ?] the letter and he took it there our taylors [illegible] has got me some paper in his saddle bags [about ?] I [kant ?] got it yet. I [page 2] would like the best in the world to git a letter from you and hear how you are all giting along I seen John Caroon and bery gordine last Saturday and went over to Solivan iland with them but I did not stay very long I want to now how you are er giting along with your crops and [illegible] you have had much [illegible] [illegible] you got [illegible] of [illegible] [illegible] good in [took ?] me then some body told him that you [illegible] planting and plouwing over I was glad to hear it for I want you and the childring to [illegible] some of the [illegible] that you can live independent in spite of them we have moved four times since we left north Carolina and I think we will stay hear some where near the cost this [somer ?] but we [dont move ?] the [sute ?} is not good but it is better than I expected we stop [we dig ?] wells [sich things ?] [page 3] but more than 6 or 7 feet deep we goo to dig steps down into [there ?] but the water is better than you would think it could be I hant had to do no duty hardly yet I haset got no [illegible] yet I think we will move before long they mad out the pay role the other day but we had to move and I donet now where we will [illegible] beyond an how it will remain save just [illegible] the other day I want you to write to me [illegible] [illegible] was gone git this [illegible] let [illegible] [illegible] and I would be glad to now ho broke open that letter and ho [illegible] it you will have to be on your watch for thear is no dependence we are half of the people I want you to wright whether they have called out up to forty five or not and how many got discharged that went of to the [illegible] I want [you ?] to wright [illegible] you have got [missing section] letter for me [page 4] or not I wrote on [thuro ?] and on the [7th ?] and I begin to think the [illegible] [illegible] to git a letter I would be glad to see you all but I dont now when that time will come I am a good deal better satisfied then I thought I would be you now very well that I ant satisfied for no place is [like] home to me than [illegible] is some [illegible] [illegible] at home we git plenty to eat some times when we are on the march we git a little hungry but we cant help that where we are [stationd ?] we get a plenty we git more meals than we can use git a half pound of bacon and as mutch sugar as we use [illegible] [illegible] that need [illegible] tollerble the wat[er] dont agree with all of us I must come to a close for this time hoping to hear from you soon may god bless you all I remain your Afectionate hus band unti[l] Death James S Alexander to [missing section] Alexander [written at top of page 4] when you wright [send ?] your letters to Adams Run S C

He enlisted in Company D, 22nd South Carolina Infantry in 1862 and served at Sullivan’s Island, South Carolina and Petersburg, Virginia. He died of fever at Farmville, Virginia, in February 1865. |
