[page 1] Montgomery June 27th 1861 Dear Mary For the first time I write you. this leaves me in good health & hope it to finds you & my children with all my friends & relatives well. I am well pleased so far; our fair is good, such as cake, bacon, Sugar, salt, coffee, rice & corn bread. Some of the boys are a little sick, though not dangerous. We drill 4 hours a day & have the rist for fun. We have no idea when we will leave here. There is over a Thousand men here now & are coming in every day & leaving for Virginia. I am in a mess with all our home boys & all get along well. Write as soon as possible remember me to my children & my love to your self Good bye Asa T. [rest of page is missing]

Mizzles (probably Martin’s brother-in-law and a soldier in Martin’s regiment) and the Mizzles family; letters from Mrs. Joseph S. McGrouder, a nurse at the Confederate hospital in Richmond, to Mrs. Martin informing her of her husband’s death and other letters from relatives. |
