Description | This collection consists of two letters written by Confederate cavalry commander Wade Hampton. Hampton served for most of the Civil War as a cavalry commander in General Robert E. Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia, eventually rising to the command of Lee’s entire cavalry force and the rank of lieutenant general. One of the letters is a brief telegram to “Gov Manning,” possibly former South Carolina Governor John Lawrence Manning, about an appointment. The other is a letter from Hampton to Confederate Secretary of War James A. Seddon, seeking to have Captain Rawlins Lowndes appointed his adjutant general. |
