Description | This collection consists of nine letters addressed from or to Captain Perrin V. Fox and his son Newton P. Fox, both natives of Grand Rapids, Michigan, and soldiers in the 1st Michigan Engineers and Mechanics Regiment during the Civil War. Most of the letters are from Perrin and Newton Fox to Ida Fox, Perrin’s wife and Newton’s mother, and were written from Murfreesboro, Tennessee, Bridgeport, Alabama, and Chattanooga, Tennessee. One letter is a business letter addressed to Perrin V. Fox from W. G. Henry. Topics addressed in the letters include Perrin Fox’s love for his wife, food in the army, religious services in camp, an African-American church service observed by Newton Fox, and the scenery of the Cumberland Plateau region of Alabama and Tennessee. |
