[page 1] Law Office of D. & T. McMAHON, Counsellors at Law, 271 BROADWAY, (Rooms 10 & 11.) New York, May 10 1865 Dear Captain, Since I wrote you yesterday the officers of the Alabama who are now in port have had a meeting and have unanimously signed the enclosed consent excepting the Paymaster whose consent I expect immediately. All I want now is your signature. Oblige me therefore with your signature & forward it on at once as I want to induce the other side to withdraw their appeal & need only your authority to operate on them. The enclosed paper is a copy of the one they signed —- the entire charge for all counsel (5 in number cannot by this stipulation exceed five percent. [page 2] If you sign it I will try & protect you as to the $250 concerning which you wrote me some time since Yours Truly D. McMahon If you agree make a copy of it & enclose to me with your signature at the bottom —- leaving out the other names--

Description | This collection consists of three letters, dating from May and June 1865, relating to the involvement of the New York City law firm of D. and T. McMahon in the case of the Confederate blockade runner Annie. The McMahon law firm was retained by the officers of the U.S.S. Alabama, one of the ships that helped capture the Annie off Wilmington, North Carolina, to represent them in prize court, where they believed the officers of two other vessels were unjustly trying to take the whole of the proceeds of the sale of the ship. |
