[page 1] 16 Boulevd Malesherbes Sep: 12th Monday. My dear Sir I will come with pleasure to meet the friends you speak of, at dinner this evening. As you do not name an hour I will be with you at half past six. As I am to see you so soon, pray excuse me to Mrs De Leon for not making my call upon her this morning as I promised, as I am quite busy sight seeing, this being my first visit to Paris. Yrs Very Respy R. Semmes Mr Ed: De Leon

Description | This collection consists of two letters, one from and one to Confederate naval officer Raphael Semmes during the Civil War. Captain Raphael Semmes commanded the famed Confederate commerce raider CSS Alabama from 1862 until its destruction in 1864 by the USS Kearsarge. The first letter, in which Semmes accepts a dinner invitation from an acquaintance in Paris, is simply dated September 12, but may date from Semmes’s travels on the European continent in the months following the loss of the Alabama in 1864. The other letter, from April 1865, is an order to Semmes, now a brigadier general in the Confederate army, to guard railroad stores near Greensboro, North Carolina, as part of General Joseph E. Johnston’s army in the closing month of the war. |
