[page 1] Hd Qtrs Mil Div of the Miss Nashville Tenn Dec 23rd 1863 The Recommendation of Lt Col Hammond for promotion in the Cavalry service of the United States. In the case of the organization of new cavalry Regiments in the Regular army is heartily endorsed by me. I know Col Ham- mond to be an active and intelligent officer, particularly calculated for the Cavalry service, both in his tastes & natural qualifications. For the command of a Cav- alry Regt or any force likely to come within the com- mand of a Col, I deem Col Hammond so well qualified, that I will be pleased in this trans- fer made of his services and feel no doubt, but that with the opportunity to do so, he will win further promotion U S Grant Maj General To Hon E.M.
