[page 1] Maryville Tennessee April 10 1860 Dear Dixon In case I can find you by addressing you at your old place at least I will make the attempt. I have not heard from you since the memorable 12 march but I see in a Philada paper which my wife takes a list of Graduates of the [Jefferson?] [illegible] and on [illegible] lonely looking over for the [illegible] of some familiar name I was glad when looking over the Alabama delegation to find the name of John Dixon. Well Dick I suppose you felt immensly good when you received that enclos- ure notice, “ Come thou good and [page 2] and faithful servant receive the reward of thy dilligence.” Well now my dear friend you have the "letters of [Aides?]" by which you may be enobled by proper exertion on your part to reach that [ackned?] to which we all desire-the top round in the ladder of Medical [found?]. My dear fellow your studies and labors are not now at an end because of your Diploma. If only [illegible] the foundation [illegible] which if you expect to have the temple finished in the highest style of act to build upon. And I do hope you will do as there is no one of all my acquaintances that I would rather see advance high in the scole of Medical lore than your own “dear self” [page 3] I am glad to see every fellow who was left there by me who were 2nd course that I cared a curse for all got through I am trying to study like a [illegible] monkey and preparing for next spring as I want then nothing preventing to come up for the same honors. And I do tell you I am not one of those who are to be “weighed in the ballance & found wanting.” I dream to graduate and not only [illegilble] but [illegible] some honor to myself. I suppose Gillispy sent you the money for your case, he told me he would do so, Haunum is well & I suppose studying. I have no news. My wife sends respects and say she intends calling her next boy John Dixon. Write me on recipt of this and give me all the news. Truly yr. friend, Jno. S McPride
