Auburn, Alabama May 31, 1909
The Board of Trustees of the Alabama Polytechnic institute met in regular annual session in the main building of the Institute at Auburn, Alabama, May 31, 1909, at ten o'clock a.m.
After prayer by the Reverend Doctor Frazer, the roll was called and gentlemen answered to their names as follows:
His Excellency Governor B. B. Comer, Ex-Officio President of the Board, and Messrs.
R. F. Ligon, William C. Davis, Tancred Betts, H. L. Martin, W. K. Terry, J. S. Frazer, R. B, Barnes, A. W. Bell, N. D. Denson, and W. F. Feagin. Eleven present. A quorum.
The secretary noted the absence of Mr. Gunnels.
The minutes of the last annual meeting were read and approved.
A motion was made that the Board now adjourn till 2 o'clock p.m., in order that the Board might attend the public exercises of the institute in a body. Carried.
Afternoon Session
Pursuant to adjournment, the Board met at 2 o'clock p.m., the secretary noting the presence of eleven members, the same as at the morning session.
President C. C. Thach read his regular animal report. At the conclusion of the reading it s moved that the report be referred to a committee of three to be appointed by the Chair.
Motion prevailed and the Chair appointed as such committee Messrs. Bell, Martin, and Davis
President Thach, as Professor of English and Political economy, read his report on the work done in his department.
The President's Budget for the ensuing year was presented, and without being read, was referred to the committee having charge of the President's Annual report, to be considered in connection therewith.
Upon a statement made by the President of the institute, it was moved that a committee of three be appointed to consider the law imposing a tax upon illuminating oils, and to devise means of better executing the same.
The motion was adopted, and the chair named the following as such committee: Messrs. Barnes, Terry, and Betts.
It was moved by Mr. Feagin that that which is commonly known as the Sub-Freshman class be eliminated from the Alabama Polytechnic Institute.
Moved, That the resolution offered by Mr. Feagin be laid upon the table. Motion lost.
Mr. Feagin withdrew his resolution, by consent, and having amended it, introduced it as follows: Resolved, That after the session of 1909-10 what is commonly known as the Sub-Freshman Class be eliminated from the Alabama Polytechnic Institute. Ayes 5, Nays 5.
